The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) imposes a 12% Federal Excise Tax (FET) on the first retail sale of certain heavy commercial vehicles and equipment, based strictly on gross vehicle weight (GVW) ratings.
Trailers and semitrailers with a GVW rating of 26,000 lbs or less are generally exempt from this 12% retail tax; FET applies to trailers exceeding 26,000 lbs. Truck chassis and bodies with a GVW rating of 33,000 lbs or less are generally exempt; FET applies to trucks exceeding 33,000 lbs.
