Here’s a guide to what the trailer buying process is really like, and things to expect—general rules for most dealerships and some of our own practices.

Before You Begin

Before you begin, there are a few important things to know.

Step 1: Define Your Hauling Needs

When buying a trailer, it's generally best to have an idea of what you're looking for. Whether you know the exact trailer type, model, capacity or brand that you’re looking for, or if you have a few basic ideas, having something in mind is the quickest way to narrow down your options.

If you’re new to hauling, you might not know exactly what you need yet—and that’s okay. There are some useful things to know: load type, hauling frequency, or budget are a few examples. Any other specifics are also useful, like physical dimensions of supplies you need to haul.

An important thing to know (and a common mistake that buyers make) before looking for a trailer is understanding your vehicle’s tow limits. Here are things to keep in mind and research for determining your tow limits:

The hitch type (bumper pull vs gooseneck)
Brake controller requirements
Connector types (7-pin vs 4-pin)
Understanding payload vs towing capacity

The Financing Process

Some dealerships may require a secured loan, so it’s a good idea to have in mind a bank, credit union, etc.

The financing process can be one of the trickiest parts of buying a trailer. And it’s important to note that this process can vary depending on the dealership. It’s also important to consider that taxes and fees may vary depending on the dealership, such as title or registration fees, or even dealer fees. Custom Ordering

Sometimes, a trailer may not have everything you need. That’s when custom ordering comes in handy. Many dealers or manufacturers are willing to collaborate with you to tailor the trailer you're looking for to meet everything you need. Of course, custom orders can increase the total price and lead to a longer wait—but it also gives you a trailer that fits your exact needs. Custom orders typically require a deposit and can take anywhere from 4-12 weeks, depending on the build.

Pickup Day

Here’s what to expect on pickup day:

Walk-Through

Not every dealership includes a full walk-through—but you should always feel comfortable asking for one. A trailer dealership should be willing to assist you with at least a basic wall-through of your trailer before you take it home. Be sure to ask your dealership if they provide walk-throughs, and have some questions ready to ask if you aren’t sure how to operate your trailer (like about the electrical wiring, how its normal or custom features work, etc.).

For example, a common feature that many haulers have trouble with is tilt trailers. Although tilt trailers are designed to make the process of loading and unloading easier, they can be a bit difficult to handle correctly. Make sure to ask how to operate your trailer’s features before you take it home.

At Poplar Bluff Trailer, we don’t automatically include a walk-through for pickup day, however our customer service team and experts are ready and available to help you with any questions about your trailer.

Registration

Registering a trailer requires a lot of documentation and steps. It can be a complicated process, but typically it involves providing documentation (like proof of ownership or insurance, a bill of sale, etc.), going through the application process, and identifying your trailer (like VIN, weight, etc.). It’s important to note that registration can include inspections or fees before finalizing.

Final Check

Although many tend to forget about this step, it’s important to do a final check of your trailer before you leave. Make sure to test your trailer’s features to ensure everything is running smoothly before you go. Here are some common things to look for:

Do a hitch hookup test/confirm it’s properly secured
Test if the brake lights/turn signals work properly
Test the brakes
Check the wiring connection
Verify that the safety chains work properly
Make sure the load rating matches your needs

After Sale Support & Warranty

Understanding your trailer’s warranty is an essential step when buying a trailer—especially for after the sale. Delivery is a convenient feature, although it isn’t always offered. It can also come with a lot of limitations (like distance) along with extra costs and fees. Be sure to ask your dealership if they offer delivery, what options they have, their distance limitations, and the costs.
